In an effort to protect the biodiversity and develop tourism in a sustainable manner, local communities are entitled by law to a 20% share in the revenue from conservation areas. Despite this, wildlife crime has resulted in the loss of at least 48% of local elephant populations while over-fishing has reduced coastal stocks.
